Sunglasses are often necessary for the Low Vision patient who is bothered by glare when
outside. Although the Low Vision aids themselves can be ordered with a tint, as well as special
transition lenses, this is sometimes not enough, especially when the aid is for general use, i.e.,
both indoors and outside. Designs for Vision, Inc has two different styles of sunglasses that
can be used with either telescopes or microscopes. These are the Slip-Behind and the Wrap-
Around. Besides providing glare reduction, the Wrap-Around has the additional advantage of
covering the aid – a definite benefit for those patients who are very cosmetic conscious.
Slip-Behind Sunglasses: Designed to go behind the frame, these sunglasses also have
the feature of a wrap-around edge which helps to reduce the glare coming in from the side of
the patient.
Wrap-Around Sunglasses: These are appropriate for any prescription. When used with
a telescopic aid, a hole can be drilled in the lens, through which the telescopic unit is placed
(must be specified on order if desired). This allows the sunglass to fit flush against the frame
that the patient is wearing. This sunglass also has a side piece which helps to reduce glare
coming in from the side of the patient.
