Dear Person of the future,
I lived in Lark Creek in the 1970s when it was still a rural farm community. My family didn’t have
much money, so sometimes life was hard. I had four sisters – Joyce Ann and May Belle were
younger and Brenda and Ellie were older. Being the only boy, I did most of the work around the
farm.
My days were pretty full, but I always started them out by running. I loved to run and wanted to
th
be the fasted boy in the 5
grade. We always raced at recess, so I practiced all summer to get
as fast as I could. I also had to milk our cow, Miss Bessie, and pick vegetables from the garden
and help my mother can them.
My favorite thing to do was draw, especially animals, but my dad didn’t think drawing was a good
pursuit for a boy and my classmates all made fun of me for it. I tried to pretend to like football
and other stuff the boys in my class liked, but I would really rather have been drawing or
painting.
My best friend’s name was Leslie Burke. She and I used to play in the woods behind the old
Perkins farm where Leslie lived. Leslie was really smart and had a huge imagination, so we
created an imaginary land called Terabithia in the woods. Leslie and I were King and Queen of
Terabithia. We even built a castle stronghold from old stuff I got around our farm and had a
secret entrance—the swinging rope on the crabapple tree.
My favorite teacher was Miss Edmunds, the music teacher. I was truly in love with her. She
liked me, too, and always said nice things about my drawings and encouraged me to draw. Once,
she even took me to Washington to see the Smithsonian and the National Gallery. It was the
best day of my life until I got home.
That was when I found out Leslie had fallen into the creek below our swinging rope and drowned.
I miss Leslie every day, but I’m glad she taught me how to be true to myself. She showed me
what it was like to live with an open mind and to believe in myself. I will always be grateful to her
for that.
I hope this time capsule helps you understand me and the world I live in.
Sincerely,
_____Jess Aaron____
