1. Background
Document background that describes the problem/opportunity at a high level and any related
work that has been done to date.
2. Aim
This section is meant to capture the business aim or purpose of the project in one or two
sentences. This statement is then followed by the specific objectives.
3. Objectives
These are the business objectives for doing the project. They should be SMART objectives if
possible (i.e. specific, measurable, achievable, results-oriented, time-bound) They describe why
we’re doing the project.
4. Success Criteria
List the criteria that will be used to measure the success of the project.
5. Critical Success Factors
List the factors that are essential to achievement of the success criteria. These are different from
Assumptions and Constraints in that if a Critical Success Factor is not achieved the success
criteria will not be achieved. If mitigation strategies can be put in place the issue is not a critical
success factor.
6. Scope
The project scope defines the boundaries of what we’re doing and explicitly states what we’re not
doing. Consider entering the Work Breakdown Structure diagram here.
