Shopping List
Free-range turkey.
Look for turkeys raised in a healthy environment, fed a vegetarian diet, containing no
antibiotics, preservatives or hormones. Free-range organic turkeys are available fresh or frozen at many
specialty grocers.
Appetizers.
Organic carrots, peppers, celery, broccoli, cauli ower, tomatoes and cucumbers are a healthy
appetizer. Slice them and dip in a homemade vinaigrette dressing. Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans
and peanuts are rich in the heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
Bread.
Choose whole grain, gluten-free breads. Like with many highly-processed foods, many types of
bread contain chemicals, preservatives and arti cial avors.
Cranberries.
A Thanksgiving must-have. Look for fresh organic cranberries. Many are imported from
Canada where colder growing conditions lead to lower pest challenges.
Fresh, not canned veggies.
Many cans are lined with bisphenol A (BPA). Many canned foods are loaded
with sodium. Opt for the bag of fresh organic vegetables.
Sweet potato versus white potato.
The sweet potato is the healthier choice. It is packed with vitamins
A and C, has fewer calories and more ber than the plain white potato.
Red or purple spuds.
For variety and a colorful display, look for red or purple potatoes, eaten with the skins
they are packed with nutrients and contain bene cial antioxidants.
Squash.
Beta carotene-rich and linked to cancer prevention, fall and winter squash are a colorful, nutritious
must-have for holiday meals. Look for acorn, butternut, spaghetti and yellow squash.
Pumpkin.
A homemade pumpkin pie, using fresh pumpkin, is a perfect nish to the holiday meal. Pumpkin
can also be used in pancakes on Thanksgiving morning, in soups, as a stu ng for ravioli, and more.
Remember, read the labels, understand the ingredients and opt for healthy choices. It’s a simple action
you can take that will lead to a happy and healthy Thanksgiving—for you and your family.
