Working with Unit Rates
A unit rate is a special kind of ratio that compares a quantity to one unit. Unit rates are usually
expressed with the word per.
Examples:
An employee earns $9 per hour. The speed limit is 55 miles per hour.
To find a unit rate:

Use the information in the problem to write a ratio in fraction form.

Divide the top number by the bottom number. Express the remainder as either a fraction
or a decimal.
3.
Write the quotient from Step 2 as the top number of the unit rate over 1.
