Terms to know:
alliteration- repeating the same beginning sound two or more times in a phrase
allusion- when a text refers to something to create a connection in the reader’s mind
assonance- repeating the same vowel sound within a word two or more times in a phrase
antagonist- the character the action revolves around
characterization- how an author develops a character (actions, thoughts, dialogue )
climax- the turning point in a story
conflict- the problem in a story
connotation- extended meanings or feelings that evolve around a word over time
consonance- repeating the same consonant middle or ending sound two or more times in a phrase (not
rhyming)
denotation- the literal meaning of a word
denouement- when the conflict in a story is resolved
dialogue- spoken words
exposition- an introduction to a story
extended metaphor- a comparison of two unlike things by saying or implying that one thing is another
through a long explanation
figurative language- words or phrases that have meaning beyond the literal
falling action- the events of a story that lead to the resolution
flashback- a stop in the current time period to look at something that happened in the past
foreshadowing- hints at what will happen in the future
genre- the type of work a text is
imagery- when an author uses words to appeal to the reader’s senses (smell, taste, hear, touch, see)
irony- when the opposite of what is expected occurs
