he solar system consists of the Sun, the
planets, and other heavenly bodies that
revolve around it. Earth, Mars, Mercury,
and Venus are called the inner planets, because
they are the closest planets to the Sun.
The table shows the average distance from the Sun
of each of the inner planets.
Average Distance from the Sun
Planet
Distance
Earth
149 600 000 km
Mars
227 9000 000 km
Mercury
57 900 000 km
Venus
108 200 000 km
How would you compare numbers such as those in the table above?
That’s easy. You just have to understand place value.
To arrange the planets in order, from closest to farthest from the Sun,
look at the numbers in first to hundred millions place. Mars is the
farthest planet from the Sun. Mercury is the nearest planet to
the Sun. The order of the planets, from the closest to farthest
from the Sun, is Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.
Understanding place value can also help you read and
write very large numbers. A place-value chart can help you
learn how to read and write large numbers.
There are now eight known planets in our solar system.
Aside from the inner planets, there are the outer planets: Jupiter,
Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
