Spelling Word Lists - 3rd Grade

Spelling
Week 1
Spelling is very important. Practicing spelling the spelling words is something I assign for
homework. In school we work on spelling/word patterns and phonics. We have two spelling lists. The
words on list 1 are word wall words or high-frequency third-grade words. The students are expected to
master these words.
On Monday or Tuesday (if a short week) mornings, a pretest is given on list 1 words, to see
what list a student should be on. If the student misses no more than two words on the pretest, he or
she will move on to list 2 plus keep any words missed on the pretest. If a student misses 3 or more
words on the pretest, then s/he will stay on list 1. Students should know what list they are on because
they will correct their own pretest and write their list number on top of the sheet. The pretests will also
come home with them.
At first, some students may become upset if they remain on list 1, but I always emphasize that
this is to insure that the words are just right for each individual student.
