Natural Selection on Genotype and Phenotype Frequencies
“What’s Bugging You”
Research Lesson 7-S3
LESSON STUDY NAME: What’s Bugging You
Author: Holland Middle School
LESSON OVERVIEW:
Research Question(s): How do we improve the ability of students to conduct careful investigations?
Goal(s): Students will be able to conduct a simulation of the process of natural selection.
Content Standard(s):
7.2.d Students know plant and animal cells contain many thousands of different genes and typically have two
copies of every gene. The two copies (or alleles) of the gene may or may not be identical, and one may be
dominant in determining the phenotype while the other is recessive.
7.3.b Students know the reasoning used by Charles Darwin in reaching his conclusion that natural selection is the
mechanism of evolution.
7.3.e Students know that extinction of a species occurs when the environment changes and the adaptive
characteristics of a species are insufficient for its survival.
Abstract: The students will be demonstrating their understanding of the process of natural selection and how phenotype
selection pressures will narrow the possible genotype found in a population.
Vocabulary: offspring, phenotype, genotype, natural selection, extinction
Materials: colored poker chips, green felt fabric
Recommended Group Size: 3 per group
