Laura’s Workshop Planning Template
Goal: What skills will students focus on during the writing workshop? This is a good place to think about
how your visit aligns with the existing curriculum or Common Core standards.
Materials: Make a list – even if it’s obvious! If there’s anything you need the school to provide (copies, a
projector), let them know in advance.
Steps: Break down the parts of the workshop. I like to list how much time we’ll be spending on each step.
Frame: Some teachers like to have a frame or organizer for students who do better with structured
writing tasks.
Model Workshop Plan: Portrait Poem Lesson
Goal: Students will draft a portrait/persona poem using point of view, imagery, and word choice to create
a distinct voice.
Materials:
1. Portraits. Teachers and visiting author will provide clippings of people from magazines and
newspapers. Another option – art teacher provides fine art portraits or art books.
2. Writing notebooks or T-chart handout.
3. Document projector.
Steps:
1. Introductions and warm up
a. Look at image of character.
b. List the facts of the image, what we can see.
c. Now imagine what this person might be thinking and feeling. What is her life like? What
happens next?
2. Mentor/Model texts
a. Read character’s poem from THE LAST FIFTH GRADE.
b. Discuss whether what we imagined as a group fits the book.
c. Share 1-2 model persona poems by kids.
3. Writing time!
a. Choose a picture.
b. Use T-Chart frame to brainstorm: “I see” and “I imagine” for the picture.
c. Start writing. Can try – Stanza 1 “I see” and Stanza 2 “I imagine”
4. Share drafts
