Acids and Bases Lab – Science 10
Purpose – to test the pH of various fluids and determine whether they are acids or bases
Safety – Wear goggles and a lab apron at all times during this lab
Clean any spills immediately and do not get liquids on your skin – rinse

immediately and continuously if you do and notify the teacher
Clean-up – all fluids may be washed down the sink with plenty of water running
Hypothesis: (no real question, more of a demo)
Materials – 4 test tubes

Test tube rack
-
Watch glass
-
Paper towel
-
4 medicine droppers
-
Blue litmus paper
-
Red litmus paper
-
Goggles and lab apron
-
Grease pencil
Procedure –
1.
Put on safety goggles and apron
2.
Construct a table to record your observations
3.
Place a paper towel on the work area
4.
Clear work area of other items
5.
Obtain a test tube rack and 4 test tubes
6.
Using the droppers in each of the 4 beakers, place 4 drops of each fluid in separate test
tubes and label (A, B, C, and D)
7.
Tear the red and blue litmus paper into smaller pieces (about 3 or 4 per strip)
8.
Place one drop of fluid A on the watchglass, and test its pH using the red and then the
blue litmus paper
9.
Record observations in data table
10. Rinse and wipe dry the watch glass, and repeat the above procedure with fluid B, then C
and then D
11. Clean up all equipment, rinse test tubes and droppers, and return dry to the side bench,
making sure not to allow litmus paper to go down the drain
12. Be sure your work area is clean and dry; wipe using wet paper towel and soap
13. Wash your hands with soap and return apron and goggles to the designated location
