Guidelines for Judges

Each speaker speaks for a TOTAL of 9 mins. First speakers deliver a 6 min opening speech and 3

min reply speech. Second speakers deliver a 9 min speech. First speakers will be given a 2 minute

break to prepare the reply speeches

Points of Information are allowed in the ﬁrst 4 speeches, but not the reply speeches. POIs may NOT

be asked in the ﬁrst and last minute of speeches (protected time).

The following elements are worth assessing in the debate:

• Did the speaker develop their arguments and rebuttals well? Were they clear?

• Did the speaker display good logic, organisation and use of evidence in their speech?

• Did the speaker tackle the right issues brought up by the debate in a strategic manner?

• Did the speaker persuade and convince you with their rhetoric and delivery?

If there is a dispute between the teams about the deﬁnition (which should be agreed on), exercise

your judgement to give all debaters a fair ‘platform’ for the debate. It should NOT be the major factor

in your decision.

Remember you are awarding the debate on an individual basis. The best debaters may, in fact, be

on the losing team.

You should be neutral about the topic and not allow any specialist knowledge and bias inﬂuence your

scoring. Try to judge the debate on the basis of how an average person would react.
