The infrared absorption process
Molecules are excited to a higher energy state when they
absorb infrared (IR) radiation.
The absorption of IR radiation is a quantized process.
The absorption of IR radiation corresponds to energy changes in
the order of 8 – 40 KJ/mol (1.9 – 9.5 KCal/mol).
Radiation in this energy range corresponds to the stretching and
bending vibrational frequencies of the bonds in most covalent
molecules.
