PEDIATRIC ASSOCIATES CARE INSTRUCTIONS
FEVER INSTRUCTIONS
Usually a fever is a sign of some kind of infection. The height of the fever is not as important as
how your child looks, and how he/she is acting. If your child was put on antibiotics he/she may
continue to run a fever for another 24-48 hours.
1)
Measure the temperature with a thermometer. Fever strips are not accurate.
2)
If the temperature is above 101°, you may treat with a fever reducer to help make the child
more comfortable. Remember, it takes at least a half an hour for medication to start working.
3)
Keep the child lightly dressed. Body heat is lost through the skin. Covers and heavy
pajamas hold the heat in the child’s body and may cause the fever to persist and even
increase.
4)
Fluid intake during fever is very important. Drinking plenty of liquids, will help to replace
liquids lost through the skin during fever.
CALL YOUR DOCTOR IF:
1)
Your child’s fever lasts more than 3 days.
2)
Your child develops any new symptoms.
RETURN IMMEDIATELY TO AN EMERGENCY FACILITY IF:
1)
Your child acts confused, becomes very listless or unresponsive or develops severe
weakness (never smiles, too weak to lift up head) or has a seizure.
2)
Your child has a severe headache or stiffness in the back of the neck.
