Requirements for 9
Grade Language Arts - Honors
Welcome to Honors English 9! This course is designed for proficient readers and writers. Your summer reading
assignment will consist of reading one of the following options:
Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie
Catalyst by Laurie Halse Anderson
Miss Peregrine¹s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Briggs
The Gospel According to Larry by Janet Tashjian
Chase Through Time, a search for Grandpa Wally by Jeff Vaala
All Honors students will also read All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque.
All of these novels are coming of age stories that tell the story one’s loss of innocence, self-discovery, and struggle
to find enduring values. These struggles may be a victory or defeat, a personal loss, and/or emotional growth. While
reading, you should identify the character’s struggles and evaluate how each experience aides in growth throughout
the story.
To do this you will need to complete the attached character chart. First, you need to find six quotes from any part
of the text that demonstrate a struggle by the main character. Please remember that a quote does not have to be
dialogue. Then, you will provide an explanation as to how that struggle leads the main character to become more
mature. Students are encouraged to annotate their text as they read. Upon completion of the novel, draw a
conclusion in the box at the bottom of the chart. Please write your conclusion in a complete sentence. Be sure to fill
out the chart to the best of your ability. One of the first assignments of the school year will involve a writing
assignment that will analyze your selected quotes.
Although discussion of your selected book with friends is acceptable, the completion of the character chart should be
done independently.
You can purchase these books at our local bookstore, the BookShelf at 831 Pearl Road, through
or at any bookstore. Do not forget that these books may also be checked out at your local Medina County District
Library.
