Directions: Your metrics written unit test will be worth 86 points. In order to get an
"A" on the test, you are required to do a metrics mini project. The project is worth up
to 14 points. The test + the project = a maximum of 100 points.
Project ideas are listed below. You may choose an idea from the list or get your
teacher's approval for any idea not listed. All projects are due right before you take
the test. Projects will not be accepted after the test.
Projects will be graded on demonstrated knowledge of metrics, effort, quality,
and educational value.
Metrics Mini Project Ideas:
•teach an adult the metric units: give pre and post tests; keep a journal
•make a list and give examples of all the changes that would take place if the U.S.
went completely metric (gas pumps, road signs, etc.)
•write a metrics song using the everyday item comparisons and record it
•make a PowerPoint, video, booklet, drawing, poster, mobile, game, crossword, or
flashcards using the 12 everyday item comparisons
•write a letter to the President convincing him to drop all English meaurement in the
U.S. and go completely metric

•make a scale floor plan of your house on cm

•make a map of Bemidji's main roadways using km and kmph

•research the history of metrics; take notes and highlight key points
•convert a favorite recipe to metric units including °C for baking temperature; be sure to
include English units

•make a list of items already in standard metric units (ex. 2 L pop bottles, running track)
•write a speech convincing U.S. citizens to go metric
•list the pros and cons of going metric
•record Bemidji's daily high and low temperatures in °C for 5 consecutive days
•make a cloth, paper, or felt banner showing °C for boiling, body temp, swimsuit
weather, winter coat weather, freezing, etc.
•conduct “Sizing Up Trees” activity

•obtain a scorecard from a golf course and convert each hole from yards into meters
