Summative Assessment for Othello:
Relationship Analysis and Character Therapy
We have spent a lot of time in class talking about the many relationships in Othello, and we
have worked on improving our ability to actively read the play. Now it is your turn to apply those skills
and analyze a relationship of your choice. You will be completing this project during class time.
Part One: Relationship Analysis
In groups of three, choose one relationship (two characters) from Othello. Try to choose a relationship
that you find interesting. During class, you will take notes on the development of this relationship
throughout Othello. It is okay for more than one group to look at the same relationship.
Consider the following questions when working in your group:
• What are the social statuses of the characters in this relationship? Does this affect how they
treat one another?
• Who has the power in the relationship? (Think about what “power” can mean.)
• Does one character try to manipulate the other? Do both manipulate each other?
• How do the characters feel about each other? How are these feelings expressed when the
characters are together? Are they expressed?
• How are those feelings expressed when the characters are apart?
• How do the characters act around one another?
• What does each character want from the other?
• What is/are the conflict(s) in this relationship?
• What is each character’s least favorite thing about the other?
• If the relationship is a romantic one (or a potentially romantic one), how healthy is the “love”
between the characters? Do the characters actually love each other?
You must include support (such as quotations) for all of your answers to these questions. Feel free to
include any other information that you think is helpful. Be sure to look at the development of this
relationship throughout the entire play. This includes any scenes between those characters, or any
scenes where their relationship is discussed.
TAKE NOTES. The more you write down while in your groups, or even on your own, about your
chosen relationship, the better off you will be. Your notes will help you to better understand the
characters and the play as a whole. I will be checking your notes as you work on this part of the
project.
Part Two: Character Therapy
After spending time getting to know your chosen characters better, and the nature of their relationship
with one another, your group will have the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of Othello
and the particular relationship you have chosen.
Each person in your group will assume one of the following “roles”:
• Character 1
• Character 2
• Therapist
