ELECTIVE OUTSIDE APPROVED LIST OF COURSES FOR PROGRAM OF STUDY (M.S Students only)

If the course you wish to take is not on the list of approved courses for your program, you must request permission from

your academic advisor to take the course BEFORE registering for the course. Failure to obtain permission to take the

course may result in the course not counting toward your graduate degree.

CHANGE IN STATUS

FULL-TIME TO PART-TIME: Students who hold an F-1 or J-1 visa, have an assistantship, or are on Co-op are not

eligible.

PART-TIME TO FULL-TIME: Minimum 3.000 QPA after 8 SH have been completed while a part-time student. Students

who hold an H-1 visa are not eligible.

COURSE WAIVER

The Course Waiver option is to waive a pre-requisite course or to waive a required (core) course.

EXTENSION OF TIME LIMIT TO COMPLETE PROGRAM

In the case of the Doctor of Philosophy degree, after the establishment of degree candidacy, a maximum of five years is

allowed for the completion of degree requirements. All master’s degree course credits earned in a program of graduate

study, or accepted by transfer, are valid for a maximum of seven years. To request an extension, include the reason(s) for

your request, an intended course of action, and length of time needed to complete degree requirements..

COURSE SUBSTITUTION

The Course Substitution option is to substitute a grade received in one course for a grade received in an equivalent course

(applies to electives only). Approval for this request is rare unless you are repeating a course.

TRANSFER CREDIT

Please note that you should obtain prior approval before registering for a course you wish to transfer.

Courses must be completed at a recognized institution with a minimum grade of B (3.000/4.000) within the 7-year time

limit for degree completion. Attach an official transcript and catalog course description from the institution to the

completed petition. Indicate the equivalent Northeastern University course on the petition (if applicable). Please note that

credits are transferred based on academic advisor approval and up to a maximum of the credit hours of the transferred

course. For example, a 3 credit course at another institution is transferred as a maximum of 3 credit hours, even if it is

transferred as the equivalent of a 4 credit course at Northeastern.

If you are a full-time international student holding an F-1 student visa, you must be enrolled at Northeastern University in

addition to taking outside courses. You must also notify the International Student and Scholar Institute of your intent to

enroll in an institution outside of Northeastern University.

CONCENTRATION CHANGE

The change in concentration can only be within the same department, e.g. Structures to Construction Management in the

Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.
