I must meet and have a personal conference with the Brazosport College Veterans’ Certifying Official. ____
As a veteran, I can be exempt from the TSI placement exam, but it is to my advantage to take that TSI Exam so that I am
not enrolling in classes that would be difficult for me to be successful in. Also, IF I take that TSI Exam and it shows I
need any refresher courses, the VA will allow me to be certified for them. I should take that test before starting, rather
than enrolling in college level courses, not succeeding, and then trying to go backwards to a lower level transitional
course which they will NOT cover if I have not already tested. ____
After the VA processes the initial application for Ch. 31 benefits, I will receive a Certificate of Eligibility letter stating
the amount of benefits that will be received, the time period it is awarded for, and the months of entitlement, as well as
other important information. I should bring a copy of this to the BC Certifying Official’s Office for my file there. ___
I should be sure to follow the same BC catalog year and degree or certificate plan that is on file in the BC Certifying
Official’s office in E-103. Otherwise, the Veterans’ Certifying Official may not be able to certify me for the classes I
choose. ____
I will NOT receive “break pay” for breaks in between semesters. I am paid only for days enrolled during the different
semester terms. My payments come in arrears—each month is finished before the pay for that month is paid.____
Before I can be certified to receive payment for each semester, the Certifying Official must have the following
three items: 1) green copy of my Statement of Student Account from the Cashier’s window: 2) BC Request to be
Certified for VA Benefits form; 3) VA Form 28-1905 from my Houston Voc. Rehab. counselor giving approval for
VA to cover the current term. This 28-1905 must be received in plenty of time before the Payment Deadline date so
the Business Office can be notified to “hold” my bill so I don’t get dropped from classes on the Payment Deadline
date advertised in the Credit Class Schedule booklet. ____
ANY schedule change at all requires I bring a new Student Statement of Account immediately to the Veterans
Certifying Official’s Office. Otherwise, it could result in a delay of benefits and an overpayment that I would be
responsible for reimbursing to the Department of Veterans Affairs. ____
If I am certified for a class or classes and the VA pays the tuition and fees, but I never actually begin and pursue
that class/classes, once that is discovered, it must be reported to the VA. Then the college has to pay the tuition and
fees back to the VA and the college will then have to bill me for the total tuition and fees of that class or classes and
I will be responsible to pay it. Signature: ______________________________
Once the certification process is completed and leaves the BC Veterans Certifying Official’s Office, it usually takes 6-8
weeks for the VA to process it. ____
Withdrawals with a grade of “W” that reduce my training time to a lower level will result in my being required to
reimburse the VA for money they have paid me up to the point it is processed. Exceptions for mitigating
circumstances are made on a case-by-case basis. If this may apply to you, be sure to contact the BC Veterans Certifying
Official or VA. ____
It is important that I carefully read through ALL details in my letter I will receive from the VA office, and I should
familiarize myself with the VA website to learn valuable information (i.e., that it is MY responsibility to notify the VA
offices if I have a change of address, etc.) Changing any of my personal information at Brazosport College Registrar’s
Office does NOT change my information at any VA office. I must contact them personally to do that. I should also notify
