APPLICATION PROCESS FOR CURRENT PSU GRADUATE STUDENTS
To apply for the Certificate in Public Interest Design at Portland State University, applicants who are currently graduate
students at PSU must submit an application packet to the School of Architecture. Please be sure to include all required
documentation, as incomplete applications will be delayed in the review process. (Please note that acceptance to the
Graduate Certificate in Public Interest Design program does not constitute acceptance to the Master of Architecture.)
DEADLINES
Applications are reviewed twice a year for the Certificate in Public Interest Design. Applications are accepted on a
rolling basis, but all material should be submitted by July 15 for Fall admission, or February 1 for Spring admission.
SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE APPLICATION CHECKLIST
This submission packet must include all the items listed below:
A completed ‘Graduate Certificate in Public Interest Design Application for Admission’ form (attached)
A portfolio or samples of creative work and/or research. See below for specifications.
A statement of interest in public interest design (500 words maximum; not part of portfolio).
A one-page résumé listing work experience, educational background, and travel experience.
Three references, including name, title, firm or institution, email and phone number.
PORTFOLIO SPECIFICATIONS
The Admissions Committee is especially interested in each applicant’s creative potential, use of imagination, engagement
in different forms of three-dimensional expression, intellectual curiosity, and ability to communicate ideas and concepts
in writing and other forms of discourse and media. These qualities are best presented in a well-composed portfolio.
Please follow the format requirements below in putting together the portfolio:
Use no more than 12 pages of work.
Include your name, mailing address, telephone number and e-mail address on the first page.
Portfolio may contain academic research, creative work (of any kind), volunteer work, travel experience and
other evidence of your work.
Use supporting text and annotation informatively and with strong editorial control.
Illustrate your work in a manner that enables a reviewer to perceive the creative journey you experienced,
including a sense of process as well as final resolution.
Include a representative sample of your academic writing on any subject.
Submit your portfolio in either printed form or as a PDF saved to a thumb drive.
