Introduction: When making recommendations and decisions on behalf of AABB, contributors
to AABB publications should always seek to optimize patient and donor care and safety. The
AABB Publications Policy on Conflicts of Interest and Confidentiality, which is based on the
principle of self-disclosure, is not intended to discourage participation in AABB activities.
Rather, it is designed to safeguard the integrity of AABB’s publications by requiring certain
individuals to disclose actual and apparent conflicts of interest. Your understanding of the policy
and compliance with its provisions are key to safeguarding the integrity of AABB’s publications.
What conflicts need to be disclosed: Below you will find the definition of financial interest
that appears in the policy as well as illustrative examples of actual or apparent financial,
professional and personal conflicts of interest. In determining whether you have an obligation to
disclose, you should consider: 1) the definitions and examples below; and 2) whether the interest
or relationship in question has the potential to affect decisions you make on behalf of AABB or
its publications.
Financial
Financial interests are defined as direct financial holdings (exclusive of mutual funds) valued at
$15,000.00 or greater in any medical and biomedical companies—including companies whose
activities are addressed in any of AABB’s standards or in the publication for which the
contributor has contracted with AABB or AABB Press (e.g., medical device companies,
information technology companies that produce medical software)—that are held by any
contributor or the spouse, partner or minor children of any contributor or someone with whom
the contributor directly shares income.

Other Financial Conflicts:
Paid consultancy or expert testimony within the past two years.
Research funding (identify subject matter and funding organization, if permissible).
Honoraria, or gifts exceeding $100 in value per engagement directly received from an entity.
Royalties.
Professional
Membership on another entity’s board of directors or its advisory committees (whether for
profit or not for profit).
Employment with another entity within the last two years.
Personal
Close personal relationships that are likely to interfere or appear to interfere with the
independent judgment you use when making decisions on behalf of AABB.
