Purpose

The place value chart is designed to make the workings of the number system evident to

learners. It can be used in a multitude of ways, including demonstrating addition,

subtraction, multiplication and division, and the relationships between the units of the metric

measurement system and the place value system.

Many tutors have had excellent results by including the chart in their daily numeracy

activities with learners. Rather than writing numbers without the chart, tutors write all

numbers into the chart. This has the effect of providing learners with a framework that helps

them manipulate numbers.
