READING LOG PARENT LETTER
Dear Parents,
I would like to take this opportunity to explain how our Reading Logs are used in Basic
Reading. Students are required to read 20 minutes each Monday, Tuesday, and
Wednesday night, preferably out loud to a family member, in order to strengthen their
reading skills.
Reading skills are key components of success and independence. This year we will work
to read more fluently and with expression. Students will learn to get information from
what they have read, and respond to literature. More than anything, I want students to
actually enjoy reading and to see it as a means to satisfy their curiosity.
Research has shown that students increase their reading skills and comprehension if they
read out loud. I would like to invite you to help me help your child become a better
reader. Please contact me if you have any concerns about this project or its requirements.
Steps for credit:
1. Your child is required to keep a Reading Log each week. These logs are worth 10%
of your student’s grade. It will be a braded folder that will contain the reading log for the
week. Students will be expected to bring the reading log home each Monday, track
his/her reading for he week, and return the reading log each Thursday for credit. No
notes will be accepted to show that they have read. It must be recorded in the Reading
Log.
2) Your child is given the first Reading Log. However, if it is lost, I have a blank
printable form on my website that he/she may print at home or they may make another
copy in the library for 10 cents. Students will also need to provide another braded binder
to store reading logs. Credit will be given starting with the day of purchase. Back credit
will not be given. *Students are expected to read for 20 minutes 3 out of the 5 nights in a
school week.
3) Students may read a variety of things to be recorded: websites, emails, books,
magazines, newspapers, current events, textbooks for studying, etc… Sometimes a story
will be assigned for reading on certain nights and that story will need to be recorded on
the log in order to get credit. If needed, contact me, and I can provide reading materials
appropriate and interesting for your student to read at home for your family to borrow.
4) After your child read each night, the following things should be written in the
appropriate calendar square: *the title of the book being read, *the pages read, *the
parent’s signature (NO INITIALS-they are too easy for a student to copy). We all like
to think children wouldn’t do that , but it does happen. First initial is okay, but please
spell out your last name.
5) If a square is left blank or empty, we will assume no reading took place and a line will
be drawn through the box. The logs are checked every Thursday to ensure they remain
current. If a student has an excused absence, no penalty is given on all of the boxes of
days that were excused.
I have read the Reading Log letter and understand what is expected.
