SICKLE CELL TRAIT TESTING INFORMATION
It is the philosophy of the Lamar University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Department of Athletic
Training that the health and safety of all Lamar University student-athletes is of the utmost importance. Sickle cell
trait is not a disease, but a genetic condition caused by the inheritance of one gene for sickle hemoglobin and one
for normal hemoglobin. Sickle cell trait is a life-long condition that will not change over time.
Student-athletes who are sickle cell trait
positive should not be excluded from
participation, but Athletic Training, Strength
& Conditioning, and Coaching personnel
should be aware of sickle cell trait positive
student-athletes, and be able to recognize
signs and symptoms of a sickling emergency.
Additionally, precautions and exercise
modifications should be put into place as
necessary for the protection of the health and
safety of all student-athletes.
In 2010, the NCAA Division I Legislative
Council decided that ALL NCAA Division I
student-athletes must be tested for sickle cell
trait or show proof of a prior sickle cell trait
test. Lamar University requires a written copy
of the lab test result for sickle cell trait prior
to participation in any athletic activity at
Lamar University.
Lamar University DOES NOT pay for NCAA required sickle cell testing, and DOES NOT allow student-
athletes to sign a waiver declining testing.
 If you have been previously tested, provide proof of test results (lab report only) to the Head
Athletic Trainer.
 If you have not been tested, instructions to complete a blood test are included in this
document. Please call the Head Athletic Trainer if you have any questions. The cost of
testing through Medivo/Quest Labs is $32.50, payable on the Medivo website.
