Organisms and Environment Test Review
1. Define and describe natural selection.
Natural Selection is a natural process resulting in the evolution of
organisms best adapted to the environment. “Survival of the fittest.”
The one most able to adapt to a change or changes in the environment
will survive to pass on their genes to their offspring.
2. How could two different carnivores interact within the same
ecosystem?
They could interact as competitors for the same food supply or one
could be the predator/prey of the other. (Compete for resources)
3. How is a predator different from a parasite?
A Predator actively hunts/kills its prey. A Parasite must find a new host
if it kills its victim. Therefore it may be more beneficial for the parasite
to not kill its food source.
4. What are the major human activities that affect ocean cycles?
Over-fishing, Pollution, artificial reefs.
5. Describe and define the three types of symbiosis.
Mutualism- relationship benefits both individuals;
Commensalism- relationship where one benefits & the other is neither
harmed nor helped.
Parasitism- relationship where one organism benefits and the other is
harmed;
6. Why would humans want to limit the number of certain species
captured or killed every year?
Limiting the number of a certain species would ensure that there is a
large enough population remaining to repopulate the species. Ex. Over-
fishing can disrupt entire food webs and cause species to go extinct.
7. Draw a food web showing at least 2 producers, 2 primary consumers, 2
secondary consumers and 1 tertiary consumer.
8. Draw at least 2 food chains that appear in your food web.
9. How would the extinction of one of the primary consumers affect the
food web? Give at least 2 specific examples.
10. If a coal factory is built next to a forest containing both light and dark
colored moths, what would you expect to happen to the two moth
populations over the next few years?
The lighter colored moths would begin a decline in their population due
to the darker surroundings caused by the ash of the coal factory. The
population of the darker moths would increase because they would now
have better camouflage.
