NURSING INSTRUCTIONS FOR PATIENTS TREATED WITH I-131
I.
Patient to be treated

II.
Patient Control
A. Private room with private sanitary facilities
B. Patient restricted to room
III.
Visitor Control
A. Visitors under 18 authorized by RSO on patient by patient basis
B. No pregnant visitors
C. Visitors must stay behind safe distance line (yellow tape)
IV.
Contamination Control
A. Floor of patient’s room and restroom covered with absorbent material
B. Items patient will touch (bed, chair, TV remote control, etc.) covered
C. Use disposable table service
D. Wear disposable gloves when caring for patient
V.
Waste Control
A. Discard disposable and non-disposable items in separate yellow plastic
bags (DO Not Remove From Patient’s Room)
B. Items in yellow bags will be monitored for radioactive contamination and
disposed of by Radiation safety
C. Human excreta is exempt from regulations (Flush Toilet x3)
D. Housekeeping not permitted in room
VI.
Radiation Safety Practices
A. Time – Time per hour each nurse can stay at bedside is calculated and

B. Distance – Safe distance line indicated on floor (Yellow tape)
C. Film badge – Wear during shift and do not share film badges
D. No pregnant nurses
E. Radiation survey of restricted and unrestricted areas made
F. Room, bed, and chart posted
G. Nursing INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETED AND POSTED (ATTACHED)
H. Notify RSO immediately if patient has a medical emergency or dies
VII.
Release of Patient
A. RSO will release patient from precautions
VIII. A. Room cannot be released until removable contamination is less
