Scientists often make models in the laboratory to help them understand processes or structures. In this
activity, you will use your creativity and your understanding of the structure of a flower to make a model
from various craft materials and art supplies. Each model will be put on display at Open House. You may
work with a partner if that student is in the same period science class.
Staple the two grading sheets together.
Materials
Various materials such as paper plates and cups, containers (covered with paper so no advertising
shows), wire, string, beads, buttons, cardboard, bottles, colored paper, pipe cleaners, yarn, etc.
Glue and scissors
5 X 8 inch card
Procedure
1. Decide what materials you will use to construct your flower and build a three-dimensional model
of a flower. Please do not make your flower too large or too small as we will have ~120 flowers on
display. Quality of construction is important.
2. The flower you create should contain each of the parts listed in the table below.
Parts of a Flower
1. Petals
2. Sepal
3. Stem
4. Stigma
5. Style
6. Anther
7. Filament
3. Each of the structures that are represented on your flower must be labeled.
Using a marker or sticker, write the corresponding number of the flower part
from the table above on your flower model.
4. Fold a 5 x 8 inch card in half so it measures 4 x 5 inches with the lined side not
showing. (Distributed in class)
5. On one side of the card, neatly print your first and last name and science period.
6. On the other side of the card, draw your flower model and color it the same colors as are in your
model. Then label your flower drawing using the same labels from the above table. Example:
Stem
7. Put your flower in a small vase or unlabeled, clean bottle to bring to school for display at Open
House. Your model should stand upright. If you do not have a vase, you may make one from a tall
can that you have covered with paper such as contact paper or wrapping paper. No lettering or
advertising should show on the vase or on the flower other than the numbers you have written.
Attractiveness counts!
