LAB EXERCISE
PRESSURE
NAME: __________________________
DATE: _____
PURPOSE: To calculate the pressure caused by a force. To determine the effect of area on pressure
MATERIALS: ¼-in. graph paper
PROCEDURE:
1. Obtain five (5) sheets of graph paper. Mark one as PART ONE. Mark two as PART TWO. Mark the last two as
PART THREE.
2. Find the mass of one sheet. Record the mass in the Data section.
3. Take off your shoes.
3. Place the paper marked PART ONE on the floor near your seat.
4. Stand on the paper with one foot off the ground (balance on one foot, do not support yourself any other way) and
have your partner trace the outline of your foot.
5. Place the two papers marked PART TWO on the floor near your feet.
6. Stand on the papers with both feet, one per page (at the same time), and have your partner trace the outline of
your feet.
7. Place the two papers marked PART THREE on the table. Place one hand on each paper and push down as hard
as you can. Have your partner trace the outlines on your hands.
8. Cut the foot and hand prints out. Be sure to label them as Part One, Two or Three. Find the mass of each cutout
and record the measurements in the Data section
9. Record your weight in the data section.
DATA:
YOUR WEIGHT (in pounds) ____________
Mass of one sheet of graph paper (in g) ___________
Length of the full sheet of graph paper (in m) ____________ (in inches) ____________
Width of the full sheet of graph paper (in m) ____________ (in inches) ____________
PART ONE
ONE FOOT
PART TWO
TWO FEET
PART THREE
TWO HANDS
Mass of cutout
_________
Mass of cutouts _________
Mass of cutouts _________
CALCULATIONS:
2
This part of the lab does NOT use the metric system. You are to use pounds (lbs) for weight and square inches (in
)
for area.
STEP ONE: Calculation of the area
1. Calculate the area of the full sheet of graph paper in square inches.
2. Find the ratio of square inches per gram for the full sheet of graph paper.
