the background as a standalone component of the paper; connections were not drawn to the focus of this

The paper provides background of either the figure’s life or their field - but not both. The topic one covered may
tie into the focus of this research assignment but the absence of the other topic keeps this portion of the paper

from meeting the expectations.
The background introduction is ignored, inaccurate, or entirely too long therefore not really serving simply as an

Part III Significance and Role

The focus of this section is on the impact the figure had on their field of significance. The research is clearly
focused on the person’s life within their field of significance/expertise. This section is written in a way which

communicates the author’s understanding of the impact their figure had. The author’s contributions –
introductory sentences, linking statements, transitions, and summary sentences – are indicative of their
understanding beyond just the borrowed information.
The focus of this section is on the impact the figure had on their field of significance. The research is focused on

the person’s life within their field of significance/expertise. The author demonstrates an ability to find the
pertinent information and include it in their research paper. The meaningful connections evident through
original contributions are not evident in this paper. The borrowed information is cited accurately and pertinent.
There is an effort to make the focus of this section the impact the figure had on their field of significance. The

a biography or a history of the field of expertise/significance. The author fails to make the connections between
the two.

significance. There is an effort to connect life experiences with future actions. In like manner the author uses

the history of the field to make connections to their figure’s legacy. In this section the author needs to draw
their own conclusions, therefore, the significant contributions will be in the form of making connections
between pieces of information. This author does this quite well.
