(SSR)

My gift to you is that you get to read every day!!

Silent sustained reading grades will be based upon the total number of GOOD FIT BOOKS read and

the manner in which you record and reflect upon those books in your Independent Reading Log and in your

Reader’s Workshop Notebook.

Reading at home and during Reader’s Workshop in school has two basic purposes: to become

engaged in and enjoy whatever it is you have chosen to read AND to imagine your way into lives,

environment, circumstances and experiences of the kinds of characters you are unlikely to have a chance to

know in real life. Choose books that interest you, ones that capture your attention, ones that challenge your

reading abilities, and ones that you enjoy reading!

The FORTY BOOK CHALLENGE Expectations are as follows:

Fall Trimester, 8

grade*

13 books - Platinum Level

11 books – Gold Level

9 books – Silver Level

7 books – Bronze Level

Winter Trimester, 8

grade

14 books - Platinum Level

12 books - Gold Level

10 books - Silver Level

8 books - Bronze Level

*Note: Spring Trimester Requirements will return to the Fall Trimester Schedule.

Keep a record in your Forty Book Challenge Book List Recorder for all books – it is how you will document

the number of books read this year. You may only record GOOD FIT novels/books for class credit (no

magazines, newspapers, blogs, or comic books, please). Books must have been read and completed during

the school year in order to be counted. Be prepared for Independent Reading Log entries throughout the

year where you will share your THINKING with me. Bring a book to class everyday for SSR and to read

upon completion of class work.

Please keep this contract in your binder throughout the school year.
