Nightly reading is important. It develops a reading routine and increases vocabulary
knowledge. I would like to share some information I recently read on a reading specialist’s
website regarding the impact of reading on student achievement. Here are the numbers that
support reading and its impact on achievement and vocabulary acquisition:

Fourth graders at Washington School are expected to read at home for at least 100 minutes a
week. Ideally, the reading should be spread out over several nights and students are
assigned 20 minutes of reading each night as part of their homework.
Reading logs are due on Friday each week.
