Why is knowing the definition and an example of a term so important in mathematics?
Lesson Objective(s)
Students will be able to:
 Communicate the definitions of variable, value, variable expression, exponent, Base of a
Power, equation, order of operation, domain, range, and function
 Apply their understanding of the terms into mathematics
 Translate the definitions into their own words
Criteria for Success
Formative Assessment:
Teacher will assess prior knowledge using the Knowledge Rating sheets. Teacher will also be
able to informally assess by listening to paired discussion during the scavenger hunt and can
clear up misconceptions.
Scavenger hunt worksheets can also be used to further assess understanding of mathematical
terms.
All around the world oral discussion can also be used to assess informally.
Summative Assessment:
Math journals will provide a culminating assessment in true understand of terms and can be
evaluated using a scoring guide.

 One computer and SMART Board for the teacher.
 One computer for each pair of students.
 One copy of the Knowledge Rating sheet for each student.
 Scavenger hunt worksheet for each pair of students.
