Course Goal:
To prepare the student to teach woodwind instruments to beginner instrumentalists.

Clarinet 1
Student aptitudes, ranges/transposition, parts/assembly, starting embouchure,
holding positions, care, first sounds.
Sept. 9
Clarinet 2
Perform tunes on top joint only, bottom joint notes, advanced embouchure.
Sept. 12
Clarinet 3
Tuning and intonation; register names; factors that cause
sharpness and flatness; basic articulation, tone problems and solutions.
Sept. 16
Clarinet 4
Chromatic fingerings, left hand: C/D, D/E, F/G, right hand:
(pinkies) E, F, F/G, G/A. Rules for fingering low notes.
Sept. 19
Clarinet 5
Technique problems and solutions w/little fingers and throat tones,
Chromatic fingerings in low register and low notes.
Sept. 23
Clarinet 6
Clarion register, break, chromatic scales
Sept. 26
Clarinet 7
Mid-term clarinet quiz on the break, clarion register and one-octave scales.
Sept. 30
Clarinet 8
Problems and solutions for crossing the break, introduction to altissimo.
Assignment: Begin outline for clarinet from Westphal and class notes.

History of clarinet; review of study materials and solos;
instrument, mouthpiece and reed selection.
Oct. 7
Sax 1
Clarinet outline DUE! Student aptitudes; ranges and transpositions; registers
and break; Assembly; tuning; holding and hand position; care.
Fall Break!
Oct. 14
Oboe 1
Aptitudes; ranges; parts and assembly; reeds and reed
styles; embouchure and tone production; half hole and
octave keys; care. Assignment: Begin Sax and Oboe outlines.
