Understanding your PSAT Scores 2011
 The PSAT measures three basic academic areas: critical reading, mathematics
problem-solving and writing skills.
 How is it scored? Students receive one point for each correct answer. For
incorrect answers to multiple-choice questions a ¼ point is deducted. Nothing is
deducted for unanswered questions or grid-in response questions. Scores for each
section are converted to a scale from 20 to 80.
 Percentiles are given to compare your score to those of other students in your
grade level.
 What SAT ranges can you expect? The quick way to estimate your SAT score
is to add a “0” to your PSAT score. Example: A Critical Reading score of a 50
equals approximately a 500.
 The PSAT is also the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The
Selection Index is the sum of your critical reading, math and writing skills scores.
This score is used to compare a student’s performance with that of other juniors.
Of the 1.5 million entrants, only 55,000 will score high enough to qualify them for
recognition. Those students will be notified of their standing in September of
2012.
