1. Why is it so important to understand decimal place value?
2. How can we compare decimals?
TEKS/Essence Statements:
5.1) Number, operation, and quantitative reasoning. The student uses place value to represent whole
numbers and decimals. The student is expected to:
(B) use place value to read, write, compare, and order decimals through the thousandths place.
Critical Skills/Postsecondary Goals:

Instruction/Classroom Activities:
Small Group Instruction:
For the small group instruction, read the book, Piece = Part = Portion: Fractions = Decimals =
Percents by Scott Gifford to the group. As you read through the book, discuss how each the fraction,
decimal, and percent are determined of what is illustrated in the photo. Also, create a T-chart and as
you go through the book chart the fraction and equivalent decimal value.
Guided Practice:
For the guided practice, use the T-chart created in the small group instruction to emphasize place
value. Introduce the place values of the decimal number. Show a decimal number such as 0.25 and
have the students identify the place value of the 2 and then of the 5. Continue this practice for the
rest of the numbers on the T-chart or add additional numbers for the students to use. Use
PowerPoint, Decimal Chart.
Stations/Centers:
• Station 1: Students will determine place value of different numbers. Using the document,
Decimal Place Value, the students will identify the place value by putting a clothespin on the
circled number that is in the place value requested. For example the card may have the number
1.217 and the question will ask which number is in the hundredths place. Students will put a
clothespin on the number 1.
