CASE DEFINITION FOR AIDS FOR SURVEILLANCE PURPOSES
1993 EXPANSION FOR ADULTS AND ADOLESCENTS
For national reporting, a case of AIDS is defined as an illness characterized by one or more of the listed “indicator” diseases,
depending on the status of laboratory evidence of HIV infection. The following information is excerpted from MMWR, Vol. 41,

APPENDIX B. Conditions Included in the 1993 AIDS Surveillance Case Definition
HIV positive person with CD4 cell counts < 200/ul or a CD4 percent < 14% *
Candidiasis of bronchi, trachea, or lungs
Candidiasis, esophageal
Cervical cancer, invasive *
Coccidioidomycosis, disseminated or extrapulmonary
Cryptococcosis, extrapulmonary
Cryptosporidiosis, chronic intestinal (greater than 1 month's duration)
Cytomegalovirus disease (other than liver, spleen, or nodes)
Cytomegalovirus retinitis (with loss of vision)
Encephalopathy, HIV-related
Herpes simplex: chronic ulcer(s) (greater than 1 month's duration); or bronchitis, pneumonitis, or esophagitis
Histoplasmosis, disseminated or extrapulmonary
Isosporiasis, chronic intestinal (greater than 1 month's duration)
Kaposi's sarcoma
Lymphoma, Burkitt's (or equivalent term)
Lymphoma, immunoblastic (or equivalent term)
Lymphoma, primary, of brain
Mycobacterium avium complex or M. kansasii, disseminated or extrapulmonary
