Social Studies – Continent/Country Project
As you know, our second graders have been studying about the seven continents (North America, South
America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Antartica, and Australia). Each class in second grade was assigned a continent
to research for this project. Within each continent we decided to let the students learn about specific countries.
Each student will be responsible for researching and learning facts about their assigned continent/country.
Project Explanation:
Students will complete a book report on any book they choose. Projects will be due on
We have developed an outline for the students to use when doing their research. The students will use
a pre-made bubble map to record the specific information requested. Opportunities will be provided in
the classroom and in the computer lab for the students to conduct some research.
The students will then transfer their information from the bubble map into a report form. This form will
be provided by the teachers.
Students will be required to have a “visual aid” during their presentation. This visual aid can be, but is
not limited to, a poster with a drawing of their continent and country or something that has been made
that represents their continent and country. You may be as creative as you would like.
Students will receive a social studies grade on the report, so it is important that they take it
seriously and do their best work.
Students will give an oral presentation of their continent/country reports in class on celebration day.
In connection with this project, students will be allowed to come to school dressed in clothing that
represents the culture of their continent/country. THIS IS OPTIONAL. Students are not required to
dress up. They will neither earn nor lose points for this.
How Students will be Graded:
Students will be graded according to the attached rubric.
Again, students will NOT lose any points if they do not dress up. We are simply including this
component of the project for the children who would like to dress up for fun.
How Parents Can help:
Please make sure your child completes the report form. Ask your child questions about the
continent/country to check for comprehension on the facts learned.
Please review the attached rubric. Check your child’s report to ensure that it adheres to all of the
components listed on the rubric. Send the rubric back to school for grading.
If your child chooses to dress up, please make sure the clothing is appropriate for school and that toy
weapons are not included.
Have your child practice his/her oral presentation at home. It would help to provide an “audience” for
your child (ex. Brothers, sisters, aunts/uncles, grandparents, etc.)
Thanks for all you do to help and support your child!
