I use this chart to convert music notation, in different keys, to the hole numbers of the
Major Diatonic Harmonica. The top row are the harmonica's hole numbers. The black
numbers (capital letters) represent blowing the note, and the red numbers (small letters)
represent drawing the note. The blue (1
st
) column furthest left are the key names. I have
chosen the most popular keys which cover about 98% of all harmonica music.
As an example of how to use the the chart, If I arrange a piece of music in the key of F,
and on my music score the first note I come to is an 'A', I go to the row that starts with 'F'
and I move my finger across until I get to an 'A' and I see that I have three choices of 'A'
along the line. Which A you choose is entirely up to where it comes in the piece, sometimes you
need to start on a low note, sometimes a middle note, and sometimes a high note. In this case
I will choose a middle range 'A' and choose the second A in the row. If I then follow the column
up to the top row & I see that that 'A' needs to be a blown 5 hole. So I write 5 in black above the
note in the score. My next note in the score is a 'D'. So again I go along the 'F' row, because that is
the key that the piece is in, until I come to the next 'D' above the A I had previously chosen, why
above, well that is the way the note is moving in the score. So the next 'D' above 'A' in the 'F' row
is in the red 6 column, so I write a red six above the note in the score. Remember the red tells me
that it is a draw note, which I have to indicate in the Tab. And that is it, I do this for all the notes in
my arrangement until I have completed the 'hole mapping'. Then I transcribe it in TableEdit as a tab.
