10th Grade French Horn Skill Checks
(all skill checks are taken from the Intermediate Rubank book unless indicated)
1st Quarter
Skill Check #1: Sign up and play the Watkins Farnum and a 1 octave chromatic scale starting on Bb
concert. Tongue going up and slur going down.
Skill Check #2: Marching Music Memory Check
Skill Check #3: Marching Music Memory Check
2nd Quarter
Skill Check #1: A score of 60,000 or higher on level 4 of the Tune It II program. The program
is on the computer in the Midi Lab.
Skill Check #2: p. 21 #2 Chromatic Etude in the middle of the page. Double check enharmonic notes on
the attached fingering chart.
Skill Check #3: p. 21 “Legato Chromatic Etude” Keep the sixteenth notes even and slurred.
Use the correct fingerings, check the fingering chart if unsure. Use the thumb trigger on every
note higher that G#/Ab.
3rd Quarter
Skill Check #1: p. 22 “Dotted Eighth Note Study” Keep the rhythm crisp, do not swing it. All E’s
and B’s are flat.
Skill Check #2: p. 24 #3 “Eb Major Scale Study” E, B, and Ab’s. Use the correct fingering.
Keep the notes slurred and even. At the end of the 2nd and 3rd lines you may
play either the bottom or top notes
Skill Check #3: p. 25 #3 “C Minor Etude” Pay attention to the key signature and articulation
(tonguing, slurring and accents.)
4th Quarter
Skill Check #1: p. 27 #1 “Dance #1”. The counting in the first measure is 1&a 2e&. Make sure
those groups of notes do not sound the same. Pay attention to the accents and staccatos.
Skill Check #2: p. 27 #2 “Dance #2”. The counting in the first measure is 1&a 2& 3& 4&. Do
not speed up the last 4 notes.
Skill Check #3: This sectional will have 2 parts.
Part 1 Instrument check to make sure everything is working properly (including movable slides.)
Part 2 play the chomatic scale on the back side of this page from memory.
