GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSE TO DEFENDANT’S LETTER

The United States of America, by and through Assistant

United States Attorney Thomas M. O’Rourke, submits this response

to the defendant Karla F. Haswell’s letter of September 8, 2006

(document 191).

On or about April 12, 2000, a grand jury in this dis-

trict returned an indictment charging Ms. Haswell with several

violations of criminal statutes.

On June 12, 2001, the defendant pleaded guilty to Counts

5 and 24 of the indictment pursuant to a plea agreement with the

government.

Those counts charged, respectively, health care

fraud in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1347,

and conspiracy in violation of Section 286, Title 18.

On October 17, 2001, this court sentenced the defendant

to a five-year term of probation and ordered her to pay restitu-

tion in the amount of $524,877.00.
