PLEASE DO NOT WRITE ON!!
Lab: Forming Ionic Compounds
Objectives:
 You will demonstrate your understanding of Ionic bond formation and the Octet Rule by
making your own ionic compounds.
 You will be able to explain how ionic bonds are formed, what an ion is, and which atoms
lose or gain electrons in an ionic bond.
Procedure:
Part One:
Please get into your assigned groups of 2.
1. Open your baggies and arrange the small objects into color groups.
2. Now, arrange your element cards into sets. Put same elements into stacks within their sets. You
should have 3 of each element.

Part Two: EVERYONE WILL RECORD AND TURN IN A PAPER!!!
If you build it…
list below
1. You will create the twenty ionic compounds from the
with your partners.
2. Place the first atom (circle) on the table and using the same colored objects make the correct Lewis
Structure for that atom.
3. Do the same with different colored objects for the second atom.
4. Take a colored object from the first atom and move it into an empty place with the second atom. The
goal is to have Eight objects on the second, and zero on the first.
5. If the second has 8 and the first still has one or two, you will have to bring in another of the second
atom.
6. If the First is empty and the second still needs electrons, you will have to bring in another first atom.
7. When ALL atoms are satisfied with Eight or Zero draw the ionic compound on a separate sheet of
paper and include the following information:
a. Draw the ions with their correct oxidation number and how many of each were
used.
b. Give the formula of the ionic compound that was formed.
