Your Strategy for the QCS Writing Task
In Perusal Time (10 minutes)
• Minute 1
o With the stimulus sheet closed, read the front cover closely – every word, every tip, every
instruction
• Minutes 2 and 3
o Open the stimulus sheet.
o Find the section “About Your Task”
o Identify the word/phrase that is the concept for the paper.
o Close the stimulus sheet
o Think about the concept. What do you know about it already? What would you write if the
stimulus sheet was completely blank except for that one word?
• Minutes 4 to 10 –
o Re-open the stimulus sheet and study it closely.
o How does it connect with what you already know about the concept?
o Choose the one (or two items…NO MORE) on the sheet that you will relate to.
The First Half Hour
• Leave your response booklet closed
• Once you have decided how you will respond, close
the stimulus sheet. You are finished with it.
• Fill out the initial brainstorming diagram. Check
that you have enough information to complete a 600
word response. Make sure you state clearly your
central idea i.e. thesis statement
• Decide on the best order for your ideas. Number
them 1, 2, 3 etc.
• Using the loose-leaf paper, write your introduction.
• Leave at least 10 lines before the next paragraph
and write your second paragraph (the first body
paragraph or supporting paragraph of your essay.)
The Second Half Hour
• Continue writing as much of your first draft as possible on loose paper, leaving 10 lines between
each paragraph.
• At the end of this half hour, stop drafting whether you have finished your draft or not.
The Last Hour
• The First Five Minutes
o Do nothing. Clear your mind.
o Close your eyes; have a drink of water
o Look up at the ceiling; think about the holidays etc.
• The next 10 to 15 minutes
o Edit your work, carefully and meticulously. (see below)
o Use the 10 lines between paragraphs for re-writing and fine tuning
o Don’t just add commas and capital letters; rewrite sections to improve them.
