Capstone   P roject   G uidelines  
The   C apstone   P roject   i s   m eant   a s   a   w ay   f or   s tudents   t o   d isplay   t he   k nowledge,   s kills   a nd  
abilities   t hey   h ave   a cquired   t hroughout   t heir   u ndergraduate   m usic   d egree   p rogram.   T he  
project   w ill   b e   a mple   i n   s cope,   d epth   a nd   i ntensity   t o   a dequately   s howcase   t he   s tudents’  
abilities   a nd   g arnered   k nowledge.    
This   g uide   w ill   h elp   t he   s tudent   t hrough   t he   p rocess   o f   c hoosing   a   c apstone   p roject,   f orming  
his/her   c ommittee,   u nderstanding   t he   r equirements   o f   t he   p roject,   a nd   h ow   t he   p roject   w ill  
be   e valuated.   ( See   t he   C apstone   A ssessment   F orm   f or   o bjectives   a nd   r ubric)  
Types   o f   P rojects:   T he   c apstone   m ay   t ake   m any   f orms,   b ut   w ill   f all   i nto   o ne   o f   f ive   g eneral  
categories:  
1. Recital  
 
2. Lecture   R ecital  
4. Analysis   p aper  
3. Composition/Arrangement  
5. Research   P aper  
1.   R ecital:   T he   r ecital   c apstone   p roject   w ill   c onsist   o f   a   4 0-­‐minute   s enior   r ecital,   p rogram  
notes   a nd   a   p aper   o f   a t   l east   s even   p ages,   w hich   w ill   p resent   d etailed   i nformation   o n   t he  
pieces   t o   b e   p erformed.   T his   w ould   i nclude   i nformation   o n   c omposers,   p ieces   a nd   s tyles;  
putting   t hem   i nto   t heir   h istorical   p erspective.   T he   s tudents   c hoosing   t his   o ption   w ill   n eed   t o  
work   v ery   c losely   w ith   t heir   a pplied   i nstructor   t o   c hoose   r ecital   l iterature,   a nd   t o   f orm   t heir  
recital   c ommittee.   T his   i ncludes   t he   c ompletion   o f   t he   a ttached   R ecital   C heck   S heet.    
Evaluation   o f   t his   p roject   w ill   b e   d one   u sing   t he   R ecital   R ubric.   T he   r ecital   h earing   w ill   b e  
performed   d uring   t he   j uries   h eld   t he   s emester   p rior   t o   t hat   o f   t he   p erformance.  
2.   L ecture   R ecital:   T he   l ecture   r ecital   w ill   c onsist   o f   b oth   a   p erformance   a nd   l ecture   a bout  
the   w orks   p erformed.   T he   p erformance   p ortion   w ill   c onsist   o f   2 0   m inutes   o f   m usic,   a nd   2 0  
minutes   o f   l ecture   f or   a   t otal   o f   a   4 0-­‐minute   p resentation.   A   c orrelating   p aper   w ill   b e  
submitted   p rior   t o   t he   p resentation,   f or   e valuation   b y   t he   c ommittee   u sing   t he   C apstone  
Assessment   R ubric   F orm.  
3.   C omposition/Arrangement:   T he   C omposition/Arrangement   p roject   w ill   b e   a n   o riginal  
composition   o r   a rrangement.   T he   s ubject/style   o f   t he   w ork   w ill   b e   a rrived   a t   b y  
consultation   o f   t he   s tudent   w ith   t heir   c apstone   a dvisor   a nd   a pproved   b y   t he   c apstone  
committee.   T he   l ength   o f   t he   p iece   w ill   b e   d etermined   b y   t he   s tyle   a nd   t empo   o f   t he   w ork,  
but   w ill   b e   j udged   a gainst   t he   s tandard   o f   a   1 5   m inutes   p iece   i n   4 /4   t ime   a t  
q = 120.  
Evaluation   o f   t his   p roject   w ill   b e   d one   u sing   t he   C apstone   A ssessment   R ubric   F orm.  
4.Analysis   P aper:   T he   a nalysis   p aper   w ill   b e   a t   l east   a   t wenty-­‐page   p aper   ( excluding   t he  
title   p age   a nd   b ibliography)   a nalyzing   a   w ork   o r   b ody   o f   w orks   b y   a   c omposer.   T he   s ubject  
of   t he   a nalysis   w ill   b e   a ssigned   b y   t he   t heory   f aculty   a nd   a   a pproval   o f   t he   c apstone  
committee.   E valuation   o f   t his   p roject   w ill   b e   d one   u sing   t he   C apstone   A ssessment   R ubric  
Form.  
5.   R esearch   P aper:   T he   r esearch   p aper   w ill   b e   a t   l east   a   t wenty-­‐page   p aper   ( excluding   t he  
title   p age   a nd   b ibliography)   o n   a   s ubject   a rrived   a t   b y   c onsultation   o f   t he   s tudent   w ith   t heir  
capstone   a dvisor   a nd   a pproval   o f   t he   c apstone   c ommittee.   E valuation   o f   t his   p roject   w ill   b e
