Permit Request Form for Research Capstone
This form is for students to register for CS 4980 as part of the Research Option to complete
their Capstone requirement for the BSCS degree.
Instructions for Faculty: The Research Option Capstone is a 9 hour commitment for students
interested in using research to satisfy their junior design/capstone requirement. The student will
complete research under your supervision for three semesters and complete LMC 4701
Undergraduate Research Proposal Writing and LMC 4702 Undergraduate Research Thesis Writing
course to satisfy the capstone and Technical Communications degree requirements. Please review
the student’s proposal below to verify it includes a statement of the research problem or question, a
description of work to be completed, and bibliography.
Instructions for Students: Complete this form in consultation with the CS faculty member who
will be responsible for overseeing your work and assigning your grade. Nine research hours (CS
4980, 4699, 4698, 2699, or 2698) plus LMC 4701 and 4702 are required for this option. Four of the
research hours should be registered as CS 4980 and must be for letter grade. In order to receive a
permit to register for your research course, turn this form into the Drop Box located between CCB
114 and CCB 115 no later than finals week of the semester prior to your research. This deadline is
strictly enforced.
Proposal Requirements: The Research Capstone project requires a research plan, faculty advisor
review and signature. Your proposal document must include:
 A statement of the research problem or question with at least two references.
You should read at least two papers on the research problem or question.
Consider a research paper by your advisor or, if the work is externally funded,
the proposal written for that funding.
 A description of the work to be completed
 A bibliography with at least two papers cited
Permit: Once form is received, please allow 48 hours to receive a permit. Once you receive a
permit, you are responsible for registering for the course and the designated hours as discussed
with your faculty supervisor on this form. Note: An approved permit doesn’t register the student in
the course. Research is a variable hour course and will default to one hour unless the student changes
the hours before registering for the course.
