AND DANGEROUS DRUGS CONTROL

NARCOTICS BUREAU DONATES SEIZED ELECTRONICS TO BENEFIT CHILDREN WITH
DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics (OBN) today is announcing the donation of computer
electronics and game systems to benefit children with developmental disabilities. During a press
conference today, OBN provided fifteen (15) “PSP Go’s” gaming systems and two (2) “I-pod
Classics” to the J.D. McCarty Center in Norman, Oklahoma. OBN Spokesman Mark Woodward
says the items were seized from a shop-lifting ring in 2009.
“In 2009, the OBN Highway Interdiction Unit stopped a vehicle on Interstate 40. During a search
of the vehicle, Agents found several items that were identified as stolen from an electronics store
in Chicago, Illinois. Since insurance had already been paid to the store for the loss of the items,
we were unable to return them to the store and the items became property of the State of
Oklahoma.”
---Mark Woodward, OBN Spokesman
Woodward said seized items are typically sold at auction and the proceeds go back to OBN for
drug enforcement. But in this case, Woodward said they wanted the game systems and I-pods to
be donated to another state agency that could benefit from them. The J.D. McCarty Center
specializes in the care and treatment of children with developmental disabilities. The Norman
center provides medical care and physical, occupational, speech and language therapy for
children on an inpatient and outpatient basis and serves children from birth to age 21. The staff
at the J.D. McCarty Center says the donation will be great for their kids.
"The J.D. McCarty Center is so grateful to the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics for this donation
and for giving these gifts to the amazing kids we serve. Thank you so much for thinking of us.
Many of the children we work with have never had a PSP or iPod and being able to make these
available to our kids makes there time here more enjoyable and helps us to create new
experiences for them. I truly appreciate the bureau's thoughtfulness".
--- Vicki Kuestersteffen, director and CEO of the McCarty Center
OBN Director Darrell Weaver says today’s donation is a win-win situation.
“There is not anything I enjoy more than taking from the bad guys and give to the good guys. In
this case, I take great pleasure in transferring these electronic devices into the hands of young
people at the J.D. McCarty Center and the smiles they will put on their faces. Today is wonderful
occasion and I wish I had something every day to bring to these kids to brighten their day.”
.
---Darrell Weaver, OBN Director
The Norman center was founded in 1946 by the 40 et 8 of Oklahoma, a veterans organization.
The center has grown from treating one diagnosis ― cerebral palsy ― to more than 100 different
diagnoses in the developmental disability category. The center takes its name from the late J.D.
McCarty, a state legislator whose support helped pave the way for the center’s expansion and
designation as a state agency in 1948.
