LITERACY
Core texts:

Classic Poetry
Key reading skills; reading for pleasure and understanding, retrieval and inference skills, appreciation of different
genres. Pupils will be completing regular reading comprehension work to monitor their progress. Pupils will be
organised in to three guided reading groups on Friday morning lessons 1 and 2 to allow greater focus on individual
pupil’s needs.
Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar (SPAG); pupils will continue to follow the individual spelling programme,
develop an understanding of more sophisticated punctuation such as; colons, semi-colons, brackets, hyphens, ellipsis as
well as reinforce the correct use of commas, apostrophes for omission and possession and also direct speech. Pupils
will develop skills to use more complex
sentences and apply their knowledge of noun and prepositional phrases,
relative clauses, main and subordinate clauses and connectives.
Writing Skills; Opportunities to apply SPAG skills within a range of tasks including; journalistic writing, informal and
formal letters, persuasive writing, diaries, detailed character descriptions, non-chronological reports, instructions and
stories.
Handwriting; All pupils will enter the National Schools Handwriting Competition. Pupils should work on a consistent
cursive style using a good quality handwriting or fountain pen. Entries will be judged on consistent size, orientation,
accurate joins and general fluency. Year 5 and 6 will be choosing one of the classic poems we will be studying this term
to copy for their handwriting competition entry.
Speaking & listening; pupils are encouraged to develop their ability to listen attentively to other people, asking relevant
questions in an articulate manner. Pupils will choose their favourite Classic Poem and learn it by heart to recite to an
audience.
