Code of Conduct for
Observers of
ASCLD/LAB Surveillance Visits/Assessments
All individuals participating as an observer of an American Society of Crime Laboratory
Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB) surveillance visit or assessment shall abide by this
Code of Conduct as a condition of participation.
1.
Compliance with policies and procedures: As an observer, you will be allowed to witness the
entire surveillance visit/assessment process but you will not be allowed to give input into the
decision making process or to actively participate in the assessment process.
At appropriate times, you may ask the Lead Assessor or Laboratory Director (or his/her designee)
questions about the assessment process, or the process for preparing for the surveillance
visit/assessment.
You are not prohibited from discussing the surveillance visit/assessment process in general terms,
but you must respect the confidentiality of information which is specific to the laboratory being
assessed.
This signed Code of Conduct form must be on file with ASCLD/LAB prior to the beginning of the
surveillance visit or assessment.
There may be times when the Lead Assessor or Laboratory Director may request that an observer
not be present. Under such circumstances, you should willingly honor a request to be excused.
Observers are responsible for all expenses associated with participation.
2.
Confidential Information: Unless special provisions are noted in Section 3 of this Code of Conduct,
observers shall:
(A) Regard all information pertaining to ASCLD/LAB surveillance visit or assessment operations as
confidential information, including the identity of the laboratory being assessed by ASCLD/LAB, as
well as all accreditation-related information and decisions.
(B) Not share, disclose or release confidential information without appropriate authorization.
Appropriate authorization means a requirement to do so by a court of competent jurisdiction or
authorization by the ASCLD/LAB Executive Director.
