Dear Editors,
As the new legislative session begins, it’s heartening to see that our leaders have
committed to addressing a number of health care issues. While they plan to contend with
[insert 1-2 hc issues that state leaders have mentioned], very little has been said about the
issue at the very heart of [insert state here]’s health care crisis—and that is the quality of
health care we receive.
Our health care system suffers from serious quality problems. Americans today have
only a 55 percent chance of getting the right care at the right time. Preventable medical
errors are the eighth leading cause of death in this country – and these quality problems
are a key reason for the outrageous cost of health care. About $400 billion could be
saved by improving health care quality, and those savings could be used to extend
coverage to the uninsured and improve our nation’s overall health. And it’s [no
different/worse] here in [insert state name]. Reform is urgently needed.
As consumers concerned with the quality of health care that patients in [insert name of
community] receive, we commend the legislature for examining important health care
issues. However, to make a lasting difference in the quality and cost of our health care,
we encourage state leaders to address the root causes of our health care crisis, such as
inconsistencies in care, disparities based on gender and race, and preventable medical
errors.
Quality health care is the right care for the right patient at the right time–every time.
True health care reform must tackle cost, quality and coverage as a package deal. We can,
and must, get this right. Our very lives depend on it.
Sincerely,
[X]
