Review for all:
Concept of Syllable
A syllable is a word or word part with one vowel
sound.
Movement cue: A syllable is a word (hands
extended 12 inches apart) or part of a word (hands
break an imaginary word) with one “talking
vowel.” (The first and second finger on the left
hand form a [V]. The thumb, index finger and
second finger of right hand are placed inside the
[V] as the fingers are bounced together to illustrate
a “talking vowel.”) A word has as many parts as it
has talking vowels.
Open Syllable
An open syllable is a syllable which ends in a
single vowel. The vowel is long. (Story: When a
vowel ends a syllable, it is free to shout out its
name.) Example: go, so, hi, be, me
Closed Syllable
A closed syllable is one vowel closed in by a final
consonant. The vowel sound is always short in a
closed syllable.
To teach: Convert open syllables to closed
syllables. (Example: got, sock, hit, Ben, bet)
Visual cue: Draw a closed door around the final
consonant. (When "o" in "go" makes too much
noise, consonant t comes and closes the door and
tells o to speak in its short, soft voice. When the
consonant opens the door and leaves, the vowel
gets to shout its name again -- the long vowel
sound.)
Review: First Rule for Syllabication

stand between two vowels, divide between the
consonants. (Keep initial blends and digraphs
