Checklist for Preparing Aging Parents for a Full Time Caregiver
1. What signs am I noticing that my parent(s) are becoming more stressed over little things?
____________________________________________________________________________
2. What are the things they need the most help with?
____________________________________________________________________________
3. In what areas are they still able to be independent?
____________________________________________________________________________
4. What is the physical and mental condition of my parent(s)? Are they able to help each other or
does it add too much stress on them?
____________________________________________________________________________
5. How much stress am I feeling about trying to work full time and help them out as much as
possible?
____________________________________________________________________________
6. What areas do they need help with that I just don't feel comfortable with but maybe need to get
them more help? What do I need help with?
____________________________________________________________________________
7. Who would be the best choice of a caregiver for my parent(s) that they would feel comfortable
living with, or coming in each day? (Again, this may or may not be a family member.)
____________________________________________________________________________
8. Would it be best for them to have one main caregiver, or would they do well with one person
coming in to do the cooking and cleaning and another to stay with them at night and help with
personal care?
____________________________________________________________________________
9. If you are the one reading this and feeling led to be the full time caregiver, look hard at the
reasons why, as well of the costs and benefits of doing this.
____________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________
10. Do my parents have a financial plan in place that will work regardless of who dies first? Have
they sat down with an estate planner to protect their assets? Where is this located?
____________________________________________________________________________
11. Have my parents made a will and preparations for their death and burial wishes? Where are
those located?
____________________________________________________________________________
12. Do my parents know where they would like to receive care if they have to go into rehab or a
nursing home or assisted living?
____________________________________________________________________________
13. If not, what other information do I need to have on hand? Which facilities should I visit? A
walk-in visit of 20-30 minutes will tell you about the quality of care at each place, find out what
services they offer and how these different facilities work with insurance and government
assistance.
____________________________________________________________________________
14. Who can I ask for a referral? (pastors, doctors, attorney, elderly neighbors who visit these
places) ______________________________________________________________________
15. Based on the questions above, make a list of what needs to be done and in what order and
schedule them in on your calendar.
